Our CA iPad mini Cases Are in the Works

Friday, November 2, 2012 by Beau Rosser

Like a lot of people, we received our iPad minis in the office today. A lot of customers have been asking when or if we are planning on releasing a case for the iPad mini. In short, yes, we are.

But, it's a tad bit more complicated than that.

Many of you may remember earlier this year when the new iPad (now the iPad 3rd Generation) was released. At that time, our cases—along with our competitor's products—suffered from a magnet polarity issue due to Apple changing the dynamic of the sleep/wake function of the iPad worked. This change made it so that roughly a third of our product no longer worked with the smart magnet functionality.

Frankly, our rush to market was unacceptable to us, and we pledged to not have anything like that happen again. With that in mind, we wanted to make sure we had the iPad mini in our hands before trying to develop a case for it.

Boy, are we lucky we waited. Like the iPad 3rd Generation, Apple has also changed how the smart magnets in the iPad mini Smart Cover work. Through some testing this morning (and the destruction of a Smart Cover), we've discovered that Apple is now using a magnet near the home button as well as magnets on the sides of the iPad. Together, the magnets create a step-by-step process of magnet engagement that must be followed in order to sleep/wake the iPad mini.

Now that we know how this works, we are hard at work on making our CA iPad mini cases. We're pushing to have inventory shipping early next month.

Again, we want to thank all of you for supporting us!
