This Thursday, the World Cup of Technology begins. The Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which officially runs Thursday through Sunday in Las Vegas, bills itself as the "World's largest consumer technology trade show." Others have called it a "gadget Super Bowl" or "Christmas morning" for nerds.

I have to admit, things are looking brighter - CES was a hit. Compared to previous years, there were more venders, people, and just plain cool stuff. Yes, there were tons of tablets, 3D pushers, and mine-is-better-than-theirs pitches. But if you look really hard, there are some unique items coming to market. Here are my three weird favorites

A month or two does matter when it comes to predicting the release of the iPad 2. As we get closer to the inevitable release date, the iPad 2 rumor-mill is gaining more and more momentum. Everybody is spouting out new features based on friend-of-a-friend hearsay. But what should you really believe? We all know that Apple is guarded when it comes to new products, but leaks are always bound to happen. Nobody can keep a secret, now can they?

For years, tech companies have demoed flashy prototypes of systems that let customers use their mobile phones in place of cash/credit cards or to gather other information. This year, those systems are heading out of the labs and into the real world. That's Near Field Communications (NFC).
